Cambridge from Cambridge International - a wide range of syllabuses for every learner

Whether your students need English to achieve their career aspirations or a good foundation for the next stage of their education, we offer a range of syllabuses to suit every level and ambition.

Our Cambridge IGCSE, O Level and Cambridge International AS & A Level English syllabuses are available in a variety of options, including first, second or additional language as well as literature. Our flexible range supports learners across a whole programme of study, regardless of where they are on their English journey.

Which English syllabus?

Cambridge Primary (Learners typically aged 5-11)

English (0058)

  • Perfect for learners who speak English at home and at school.
  • Develops reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for everyday situations and in study.
  • Offers strongest progression to Cambridge Lower Secondary English.

English as a Second Language (0057)

  • Best for those who speak a language other than English at home.
  • Develops ability to communicate confidently and use English in a range of situations.
Cambridge Lower Secondary (Learners typically aged 11-14)

English (0861)

  • Perfect for learners who have significant experience of learning through English, for example at an English-medium primary school.
  • Develops reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for everyday situations and in study.
  • Designed for students who will progress to our first language Cambridge IGCSE and O Level English syllabuses.

English as a Second Language (0876)

  • Best for those who speak a language other than English at home.
  • Develops ability to communicate confidently and use English in a range of situations.
Cambridge Upper Secondary (Learners typically aged 14-16)
Cambridge IGCSE

English First Language (0500/0990)

  • Perfect for learners who speak English at home and at school.
  • Develops ability to communicate clearly and use a wide range of language accurately.
  • Offers strong progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level and highly suitable for further learning in English.

English Second Language (0510/0511/0993/0991)

  • Suitable for learners whose first language is not English, but who study through the English-medium.
  • Develops ability to understand and use English in a range of situations and offers good progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level.

English Additional Language (0472)NEW

  • Suitable for learners whose first language is not English, and who study through a mixed language medium
  • Develops practical language skills and helps build confidence when communicating in English.

Literature in English (0475/0992)

  • Encourages learners to explore poetry, prose and drama from different periods and cultures.
  • Students read, interpret, evaluate and respond to a range of international literature written in English.
  • Offers strong progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level Literature in English.

World Literature (0408)

  • Gives schools the option to choose literary texts from different countries and cultures.
  • Develops lifelong skills in interpreting and evaluating texts.
  • Provides strong progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level Literature in English.
Cambridge Upper Secondary (Learners typically aged 14-16)
Cambridge O Level

English Language (1123)

  • Best for learners who speak English at home or at school, at near first language level.
  • Students will learn to communicate clearly and use a wide range of language accurately.
  • Offers good progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level.

Literature in English (2010)

  • Encourages learners to explore poetry, prose and drama from different periods and cultures.
  • Students read, intepret, evaluate and respond to a range of international literature written in English.
  • Offers strong progression to Cambridge International AS & A Level Literature in English.
Cambridge Advanced (Learners typically aged 16-19)
Cambridge International AS & A Level

English Language (9093)

  • Ideal for learners who want to develop skills in writing and responding to a range of texts analytically, critically and creatively.
  • Prepares students for entry to university courses of any discipline but is particularly relevant for those who want to study English Language, Creative Writing or Linguistics.

English Language and Literature (8695)

  • A great combination of language and literature that equips learners with a variety of transferable skills.
  • Develops skills that support a wide range of subjects and real-world situations.

English Literature (9695)

  • Supports learners to develop an appreciation of, and an informed personal response to, literature in English through studying a range of international prose, poetry and drama texts.
  • Offers good progression for entry to university courses.

English General Paper (8021)

  • Develops transferable skills through the study of a variety of topics including comprehension, constructing an argument and persuasive writing in English.
  • Great preparation for further study and employment.
