Cambridge International Project Qualification (Cambridge IPQ) is an exciting project-based qualification. Learners undertake an independent project based on a topic of their choice. Taking Cambridge IPQ helps learners build skills such as self-management and engage with a chosen topic beyond exam preparation, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate strengths beyond examination results to universities and employers. Who is Cambridge IPQ for?
Cambridge IPQ is typically for learners aged 16 to 19 years. It is ideal for students who want to explore a subject or area of interest in greater depth, develop their independence and take greater ownership of their learning.
Studying for Cambridge IPQ allows learners to engage deeply with a topic beyond the requirements of their other studies. Academic evidence suggests that this deeper engagement can help develop their ability to become lifelong learners.
What will students learn?
This is a skills-based qualification. Learners develop higher-order thinking skills that universities and employers look for, including planning, research, analysis and communication. It also builds their reflection and evaluation skills.
Cambridge IPQ is evolving
We work closely with schools and teachers to keep our qualifications relevant and responsive to the needs of learners. As part of the ongoing review process, the Cambridge IPQ has been updated, and will be available in a revised format for assessment from 2028.
The revised Cambridge IPQ builds on the strengths of the current qualification while offering learners greater choice and flexibility. Learners can choose between a research report or an artefact, enabling them to pursue projects that reflect their interests and strengths, from creative works and performances to engineering prototypes, scientific solutions and digital products. The revised qualification also places greater emphasis on the project journey, recognising planning, organisation and reflection alongside research, analysis, evaluation and communication.
Schools and learners will also benefit from more structured project templates, enhanced teaching guidance and an individual presentation that helps learners develop confidence and communication skills. As with the current qualification, the Cambridge IPQ remains 100% externally assessed by Cambridge examiners, providing globally trusted standards.
What will students do?
Learners undertake an independent project with the support of their teacher. Throughout the project, they identify and investigate a topic, plan and manage their work, carry out appropriate research, and communicate their findings or outcomes through their chosen project route. They also reflect on their progress throughout the project journey.
In consultation with their teacher who will support them, students will:
- identify a suitable topic
- develop and justify a clear project focus
- plan and carry out appropriate research and investigation
- select and use suitable research methods or skills and/or techniques
- create and present their project outcome, supported by project documentation
- use appropriate academic conventions to communicate their work
- monitor and reflect on their progress throughout the project.
How is Cambridge IPQ assessed?
Cambridge IPQ is a single component that is externally assessed by Cambridge examiners. Students are eligible for grades A* to E, and it is graded at the same standard as a Cambridge International A Level.
