Syllabus overview

The syllabus encourages students to appreciate law in real-world situations through an understanding of the main principles of the law of England and Wales. Students develop analysis and problem-solving skills and learn to communicate legal argument.

They study the structure and operation of the English legal system, and law of contract and tort (2020-2022 exams). They study the English legal system, criminal law, and law of contract and tort (2023-2025 exams). This syllabus builds an excellent foundation for further study of Law in higher education and/or a career within the field.

Syllabus updates

  • Summary of the changes
    • We revise our qualifications regularly to make sure that they continue to meet the needs of learners, schools and higher education institutions around the world and reflect current thinking. We have consulted and worked with subject experts who recommended that we updated the topics and introduced English law in a broader context. Teachers told us that some variety of question types would help students’ learning. Following the review, we have updated this syllabus and all the assessment materials for examination from 2023. Please see the 2023-2025 syllabus document for full details on the changes.

What are the main changes to the syllabus?

To support teachers and learners, we have:
      • revised and updated the topics. Topic 1 - English Legal System and Topic 2 - Criminal Law topics for Cambridge International AS Level and Topic 3 - Law of Contract and Topic 4 - Law of Tort for Cambridge International A Level
      • revised the assessment objectives and their weightings
      • included a list of key concepts, command words and their meanings.

What are the main changes to the assessment?

      • We have simplified the structure of the question papers.
      • We have updated the Cambridge International AS Level topic focus and each paper is now equally weighted.

When do these changes take place?

The updated syllabus is for examination from June 2023 onwards. Please see the 2023-2025 syllabus above for full details.

Important notices

  • Grade descriptions
    • For some subjects, the syllabus states that Grade Descriptions will be made available after first assessment in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

Publication of grade descriptions was paused in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the grading standard that have been in place for 2020, 2021 and 2022. We are currently working on producing these grade descriptions. This work will make sure that grade descriptions reflect examination outcomes appropriately and are based on the more stable grading standard that we expect to have in place for June 2023 onwards.

  • Front covers
    • From 2020, we have made some changes to the wording and layout of the front covers of our question papers to reflect the new Cambridge International branding and to make instructions clearer for candidates - learn more.
