Shaping what’s next in learning, teaching and assessment
The Futures Lab is an interdisciplinary research initiative that explores the long-term future of international education. The Futures Lab sits within Cambridge’s Education Futures team and identifies emerging challenges and opportunities, experiments with new ideas and translates research into practical innovations and approaches that deliver real value for learners, educators and education systems worldwide.
Led by Dr Martina Kuvalja, Senior Researcher, Cambridge, the Futures Lab brings together expertise from international education, psychology, computer science, engineering and the digital humanities. We work closely with partners across academia, industry and the international education community to ensure our research is ambitious, ethical and impactful.

Our approach
The Futures Lab acts as a catalyst for high-impact research by:
- scanning the horizon to identify emerging technologies, trends and research opportunities
- initiating collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects
- creating experimental learning and assessment environments
- building strong academic, industry and technology partnerships
- translating research insights into future-ready products and services.
Collaboration and partnerships
Community-building and engagement are central to the Futures Lab’s mission. We are actively looking to collaborate with:
- universities and research institutes (for example computer science, psychology, engineering)
- international education innovators and practitioners
- educational and technology organisations and startups.
We collaborate through joint research projects, experimental pilots, co-hosted events, shared supervision of students, and applications for external funding. The Futures Lab also works with leading technology companies and startups to ensure our research translates into tools that meet the needs of learners and educators worldwide.
