Future-ready: preparing learners to thrive

Join our Cambridge Schools Conference Online in October 2026 to explore how we can prepare learners to thrive in a changing world. Building on insights from our 'Preparing learners to thrive in a changing world’ research, the conference will explore how knowledge and skills, self-management and communication and interpersonal skills can help learners navigate future opportunities and challenges.

Through a series of practical sessions exploring new ideas and perspectives, we will explore topics including oracy, executive function, digital wellbeing, critical thinking, artificial intelligence and skills development. Along the way, there will be opportunities to learn from experts, share perspectives and connect with our global Cambridge community.

Keynote Speaker

Meet our keynote speaker: Mitch Weathers, Author and CEO, Organized Binder

Professor Barbara Oakley

Mitch Weathers is an educator, two-time No.1 best selling author and an internationally recognised voice on executive functions in the classroom. He is best known for translating cognitive science into practical strategies that hold up in real classrooms for all students. His work focuses on developing self-management skills like organisation, task initiation, self-regulation and follow-through without adding to teachers’ workloads.

Mitch challenges us to rethink why students struggle and how intentional systems and structures can unlock their potential. His ideas give educators a shared language, concrete tools and a new lens for supporting students. In a world where technology, analog interaction and building resilience are more important than ever, Mitch’s work with executive functioning is vitally important . The habits and practices of being a student, 'Studentness', is more vital than ever in today’s educational landscape and Mitch is among those leading the charge.

Session one: Oracy for the future: helping students speak, listen and learn 

Monday 19 October, 09:00 AM (UTC+1/BST time)

Description: In this session you will have the opportunity to think about the importance of oracy and its practical application in the classroom, exploring three key questions:

  • What is oracy, and why does it matter?
  • How can we help students develop the confidence and skills to speak and listen effectively in different situations?
  • How can oracy enhance learning across the curriculum?

This session will be useful for teachers and school leaders who want to help students develop their voice, communicate with confidence and use talk effectively for learning and life.

  • Topsy Page - Speaker
    • Topsy pageTopsy Page, Oracy, Cambridge

      Topsy works with schools and other educational institutions to develop a culture of high-quality dialogue and reasoning across the curriculum. She believes that high-quality talk is a vital ingredient in narrowing the gap and improving outcomes. As a qualified teacher and experienced leader in primary education, Topsy is passionate about transforming classrooms through student-to-student dialogue, which is too often a wasted resource.

      She delivers fun and active training, speaks on the subject of oracy and talk, provides hands-on classroom coaching, and carries out Talk Audits. Topsy is an Oracy Cambridge Associate and By-Fellow of Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, and an accredited P4C (Philosophy for Children) trainer with Thoughtful (formerly SAPERE) and DialogueWorks. In addition to teaching, she has worked as a lecturer, trainer and facilitator in the UK and internationally.

Session two: Creating a culture of digital wellbeing in school communities

Monday 19 October 2026, 15:00 PM (UTC+1/BST time)

Description: Drawing on insights from leading academics and practitioners, this session explores how teachers and school leaders can strengthen digital awareness and support online wellbeing among learners of all ages.

Participants will:

  • develop an evidence-informed understanding of digital risks and wellbeing pressures, using insights from recent research in psychology, education and digital childhood studies
  • gain practical strategies for embedding digital awareness and critical thinking into teaching and everyday classroom interaction
  • explore approaches for shaping a positive digital culture, including policies, staff development and effective communication with families
  • discover resources to guide conversations with learners, colleagues and parents about healthy, balanced digital habits.

This session is designed for teachers and school leaders across the Cambridge Pathway seeking to strengthen their school’s digital wellbeing provision.

  • Suzi Haigh - Speaker
    • Suzi HaighSuzi Haigh, Education Futures Manager, International Education

      Suzi Haigh has more than 20 years of experience in education, including as a primary teacher and school leader. She is passionate about helping educators navigate the opportunities and challenges facing schools today by bringing together research, classroom practice and the experiences of teachers from around the world.

      Suzi works with teachers and school leaders to explore emerging issues in education and identify practical approaches that support learner success. Through conferences, workshops, webinars and publications, she helps educators engage with topics such as resilience, wellbeing, and self-regulation. Drawing on classroom experience and evidence-informed practice, she is committed to translating research into meaningful action, enabling teachers to create learning environments where all learners can thrive.

  • Laura Kahwati - Speaker
    • Laura KahwatiLaura Kahwati

      Laura Kahwati has over 20 years of experience in education, including 16 years as a secondary school English teacher in outstanding UK state schools. She has taught Drama, A Level English Literature and Theatre Studies, later becoming Head of Media Studies. Laura trained at the University of Cambridge and holds a Master of Teaching from University College London, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge.

      Dr Daniel Hyde is the Head of School at Singapore School, Pantai Indah Kapuk (SIS-PIK) in Jakarta, Indonesia. He has more than 26 years of experience in education and holds a Doctorate in Education and an MA in Education Management from King’s College London. His professional interests include educational innovation, curriculum design, school improvement, accountability, assessment and teacher development.

      He is a regular conference speaker and panellist across Asia, presenting on topics including equity and inclusivity, intelligent accountability, teacher development, assessment and staff wellbeing. Daniel was the 2023 winner of the Top Learning & Development Leaders Award for South East Asia.

      Having held several roles at Cambridge including the Cambridge Global Perspectives team, Andrew Field is part of the Insight, Ideation and Impact team. Andrew focuses on developing engaging teaching and learning materials to support Cambridge's global community of educators, with an emphasis on empowering teachers through thoughtful and effective use of technology.

      Before joining Cambridge, Andrew spent fifteen years in the classroom experience, first as a History teacher and then as Head of Faculty for Computing and IT. He was also an Adobe Educational Leader for a decade, developing multimedia learning resources and supporting educators in their professional practice. Today, he focuses on educational impact, future-ready learning and helping educators navigate the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence.

Session five: Cambridge Global Perspectives: a subject for everyone

This session explores why and how to teach Cambridge Global Perspectives and understand its importance as a subject that all students can and should do. Skills taught during the research, analysis and evaluation of issues within the course can equip learners with the critical thinking, self-management and effective communication skills needed to thrive beyond school in a complex and fast-changing world.

      While working in the Occupational Therapy Department at Burwood Hospital with teenagers who had spinal injuries, Paul decided to retrain as a teacher. He soon realised, after teaching Scholarship and A-Level Biology in England, Hong Kong and New Zealand, that education was more than just the acquisition of knowledge. 

      Paul believes that educators have a responsibility to equip students with research, analysis, evaluation and communication skills, especially considering laptops and cell phones provide unfiltered internet access.

      Paul decided that Cambridge Global Perspectives was the subject that would allow him to teach students the skills required for them to question what they see, hear and read. Description: Executive functions are vital for learner success. In this session, we will explore how to develop them in every classroom.

      Mitch Weathers is an educator, two-time No.1 best selling author and an internationally recognised voice on executive functions in the classroom. Mitch challenges us to rethink why students struggle and how intentional systems and structures can unlock their potential. Description: In this session, we will share our latest thinking on skills: how they are developed across the Cambridge Pathway and how the Advanced stage allows learners to continue developing specialised skills through a smaller number of subjects.

  • learn about plans to make skill development opportunities more visible across different Cambridge subjects · helping learners and their parents to make informed decisions as they prepare for the next stage of education or employment
  • explore the new Cambridge Advanced Skills Award, a short course in Entrepreneurial Mindset currently being piloted with Cambridge schools.

Teachers and leaders will gain fresh insights into how Cambridge is helping learners develop the future-ready skills they need to thrive.


  • Abigail Barnett - Speaker
    • Abigail BarnettAbigail Barnett, Director of 3-19 Curriculum, Cambridge

      Over the past 15 years, Abbi Barnett has led curriculum development across Cambridge International, including the Early Years programme and major revisions to the primary and lower secondary curricula. She also leads curriculum reform projects with ministries and governments worldwide and has contributed to curriculum review and development initiatives across a range of international contexts.

      Abbi co-developed an education system evaluation approach based on curriculum coherence and has worked on projects in the US, Bermuda, Kuwait, India and Ethiopia. Before joining Cambridge, she was a local authority education consultant specialising in school improvement and literacy. She began her career teaching secondary English in the UK and later taught at a British international school in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2002 to 2007.
