About the University of Florida

University of Florida, USA iconic entrance arch

'The University of Florida (UF) attracts the best and brightest students, staff and faculty, places them together and connects them with world-class resources to spark extraordinary discoveries and innovations. UF’s momentum is reflected in the university’s designation as a top-five public university by U.S. News & World Report. The university is a place where limitless potential meets boundless opportunity through teaching, research, scholarship and service to the state, the nation and the world.'

'UF is Florida’s oldest higher education institution and is among the nation’s most academically diverse public universities. The university traces its beginnings to a small seminary in 1853. It opened its doors in Gainesville in 1906 with 102 students. Today, it has an enrolment of over 60 000 students annually. UF is home to 16 colleges and more than 180 research centres and institutes. It offers nearly 94 undergraduate degree programmes and 228 graduate degree programmes. Only five other universities nationwide have as many programmes of study on one campus as UF.'

Undergraduate courses

'UF believes in fostering undergraduate research opportunities in all colleges and majors across campus. Students conduct faculty-mentored research on campus and have presented their research at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium for more than 20 years.'

'Artificial intelligence (AI) is a centrepiece at UF, spanning all disciplines so that every student has the opportunity to acquire competence and expertise in AI. UF is home to HiPerGator AI – one of higher education’s most powerful AI supercomputers – for training and research purposes and is the first institution to adopt an ‘AI Across the Curriculum’ approach to providing every student in every major with the opportunity to acquire competence and expertise in AI and data science.'

International students

'The following numbers of international students are admitted to UF’s undergraduate courses every year:

University of Florida's tower basks in the clear daylight
  • 715 international – coming from China, India, Brazil, Vietnam and South Korea
  • 419 resident aliens (those legally living permanently in the US as an immigrant) coming from India, Brazil, Venezuela, China and Argentina
  • 1134 combined – coming mainly from China, India, Brazil, South Korea and Canada.'

'UF believes in embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities for talented students across the globe. Our goal is to attract students who demonstrate academic excellence, intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning. Regardless of your geographic location, we encourage you to apply and become part of the university’s vibrant and inclusive academic environment.'

Entry requirements

'At least five national exams in academic subjects, of which at least two must be at A/AS Level with a grade of A or B, are required for admissions purposes.'

'UF does not accept IGCSE English as proof of English proficiency. While not requiring a proficiency exam, UF views an A Level English grade of A or B as a strong indicator of English proficiency.'

'UF will consider students who have taken the Cambridge IPQ along with A Levels. The IPQ demonstrates that the student has a deeper interest in a particular subject and has developed skills in research, which are central to the UF experience. While not required for admission, completing the IPQ positively impacts the academic review process at UF.'

'UF also accepts Cambridge Global Perspectives & Research.'

Scholarships and financial incentives

'We consider all incoming first-time-in-college students for our merit-based waivers, including EU and international students. Individual colleges and departments within the university also offer scholarships that are inclusive of international students.'

'UF is pleased to provide financial incentives to EU and international students in the form of merit-based waivers. As an institution, we prioritise the consideration of all incoming first-time-in-college students, irrespective of their nationality or origin.'

'Additionally, individual colleges and departments within our institution extend scholarship opportunities that are inclusive of international students.'

'UF is also a partner institution of the United World College. Students attending UF as part of this programme are eligible for tuition waivers and scholarships up to the entire cost of attendance.'

Cambridge International students

University of Florida embracing the vibrant season

The university has a strong appreciation for the academic preparation that our Cambridge students receive, and believes that they enter our university positioned to make meaningful contributions to our university community.'

'UF recognises the hard work and commitment demonstrated by Cambridge International students throughout their academic journey. We believe that their exceptional academic preparation positions them as top candidates who can thrive within our academic community.'

'Dedication, perseverance and intellectual curiosity are highly valued at UF, and traits that we often see demonstrated within applications submitted by Cambridge International graduates. The international perspective and experiences provided by our Cambridge students help to foster a rich and inclusive campus community.'

Why should Cambridge International students choose the University of Florida?

'UF is an excellent option for international undergraduate students due to its strong academic reputation and diverse, inclusive community. The university is committed to fostering cultural exchange and global perspectives, making it a welcoming environment for international students.'

Advice to Cambridge International students

'Do the research to identify a college or university that aligns with your academic and personal goals. When applying, be sure to properly complete the application process for each school as incomplete files will not be evaluated. When completing your application, be sure to craft a compelling personal statement that reflects your authentic self. Each person is unique, so take the time to highlight the factors that are an important part of your identity.'

'Successful applicants tend to seek guidance from teachers, mentors and school counsellors when completing the application process and in selecting their college or university. Applying to college can be intimidating, so leveraging the resources available to assist in the process can be critical to achieving success.'
