Cambridge International AS Level Environmental Management - (8291)

Syllabus overview

This AS Level syllabus develops scientific knowledge and understanding of global environmental issues and theories, and of the policies and strategies for managing the environment. The course covers the sustainable use and management of resources, and strategies that aim to protect environments. Learners will interpret and analyse data and do investigative work. Case studies allow teachers to choose their own examples to investigate, which may be local, regional or global.

Although Cambridge International AS Level Environmental Management extends and complements the relevant Cambridge O Level and Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses, learners do not need to have studied the subject before starting the course.

Syllabuses

The syllabus year refers to the year in which the examination will be taken.

Syllabus updates

  • Summary of the changes
    • We have worked with teachers and universities around the world to update this syllabus as part of our on-going review process. Following the review, we have made some changes to this syllabus for examination from 2022.

      How has the syllabus changed?

To make this subject clearer and easier to teach we have:

      • restructured the subject content around eight topics, so it is easier to explore issues that cover several spheres at once
      • rewritten subject content with clear learning objectives, examples and a case study for each topic
      • made the scientific content clearer and more explicit and given more focus to learning about managing the environment
      • revised the Assessment Objectives.

      How has the assessment changed?

The 2022-2024 assessment will give candidates a good foundation for progression to university level study and includes the following changes:

      • Component 3 (Coursework) has been discontinued. Candidates will still develop investigation and research skills through the new syllabus and will be assessed on these.
      • The new assessment will have two components: Paper 1 Principles of Environmental Management and Paper 2 Management in Context.
      • Practical and investigation skills will be assessed in Paper 2.

When do these changes take place?

The updated syllabus is for examination from June 2022 onwards. Please see the 2022-2024 syllabus above for full details.

Important notices

  • Grade descriptions
    • For some subjects, the syllabus states that Grade Descriptions will be made available after first assessment in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

Publication of grade descriptions was paused in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the grading standard that have been in place for 2020, 2021 and 2022. We are currently working on producing these grade descriptions. This work will make sure that grade descriptions reflect examination outcomes appropriately and are based on the more stable grading standard that we expect to have in place for June 2023 onwards.
