Cambridge IGCSE (9–1) Mathematics 0980

Syllabus overview

An essential subject for all learners, Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics encourages the development of mathematical knowledge as a key life skill, and as a strong basis for more advanced study. The syllabus aims to build learners' confidence by helping them develop competence and fluency with mathematical concepts, methods and skills, as well as a feel for numbers, patterns and relationships. The syllabus also places a strong emphasis on solving problems and presenting and interpreting results. Learners also gain an understanding of how to communicate and reason using mathematical concepts.

This syllabus is graded from 9 to 1 but is otherwise the same as Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580). You will find past papers and other resources for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) that may be useful for teaching Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Mathematics

0980 syllabus replaces Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Mathematics (0626) from 2019 onwards. The last series for Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Mathematics (0626) will be November 2019.

Syllabus updates

  • Syllabus changes
    • We have updated the subject content and included more examples to better exemplify the depth of required teaching.

One of the papers at each tier is now a dedicated non-calculator paper, allowing candidates to demonstrate more of what they know and can do, without changing the standard and demand of the qualification.

These changes will improve candidates’ overall experience and the accessibility of the papers.

We have made the changes in line with other Cambridge Upper Secondary Mathematics qualifications, supporting those teaching more than one syllabus at this level.

For full details of the changes, please see the 2025-2027 syllabus above or download our factsheet for an overview.

We aim to provide a scheme of work and other relevant classroom resources. Example Candidate Responses will be available following the first examination in 2025. Visit the School Support Hub from June 2025 onwards for details.

Important notices

  • Syllabus availability
    • In June, this syllabus is available in Administrative zone 3 and for centres in Oman and UAE. In November, this syllabus is available in Administrative zone 3 only. Check the administrative zones for your school.

  • Grading scale
    • Please note that if you make an entry for the 9-1 grading scale, it is not then possible to switch to the A*-G grading scale once the entries deadline has passed. If you find that you have accidentally made an entry for the 9-1 syllabus, you must withdraw and re-enter before the entries deadline.

  • Grade descriptions
    • For some subjects, the syllabus states that Grade Descriptions will be made available after first assessment in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

Publication of grade descriptions was paused in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the grading standard that have been in place for 2020, 2021 and 2022. We are currently working on producing these grade descriptions. This work will make sure that grade descriptions reflect examination outcomes appropriately and are based on the more stable grading standard that we expect to have in place for June 2023 onwards.
