Cambridge has launched a pioneering climate literacy programme, bespoke to Pakistan, designed to equip young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take meaningful action on climate change. Developed in collaboration with Cambridge Zero at the University of Cambridge and Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Climate Quest Pakistan edition, is part of Cambridge’s global commitment to embedding climate change education across all levels of learning.
Today, at the launch, schools and ministries pledged to enrol 205,000 students on the climate literacy course. The programme is a free, 2.5 hour, self-paced online course, designed for learners in Years 8 to 12. It provides a foundational awareness of climate change issues and is accessible to learners enrolled in all educational boards across Pakistan, including government schools. In collaboration with environmental experts from LUMS, the programme contains regional case studies tailored to integrate Pakistan-specific climate challenges, such as the 2010 floods, the 2017 heatwave, Lahore’s air pollution crisis, and local and national sustainability policies, including flood protection plans.
It also connects these pressing local issues to global climate science and encourages learners to translate knowledge into action by developing community projects that address sustainability and resilience.
The launch of the programme in Pakistan brought together school leaders, academics, policymakers, journalists, and representatives from the Ministry of Climate Change. Speaking at the event, Peter Phillips, Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press & Assessment said: 'Pakistan is on the frontline of the climate crisis, but it is also home to one of the world’s largest youth populations, full of resilience, innovation, and talent. Through Climate Quest, we want to support learners in Pakistan not only to understand the science of climate change but to design and lead solutions that make a real difference in their communities.'
The initiative is part of a wider global framework: Climate Quest will continue to expand to more countries and age groups, with content and assessments continuously updated to reflect the latest in climate research and education.
