Quick facts

University: Charité Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, Germany

Degree: Human Medicine

School: Al Wadi International School, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Studied:
Cambridge International IGCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, English, German, Maths, Physics, Arabic.
Cambridge International A Level in Biology. Also studied three further A Levels with another exam board.

Why did you decide to study Human Medicine at university? Did your Cambridge studies help guide your choice of degree?

The Cambridge International A Level Biology curriculum, with its comprehensive approach and practical component, played a pivotal role in nurturing my interest in medicine. Through hands-on laboratory work and in-depth exploration, I developed a profound understanding of the human body at a cellular and molecular level.

Why did you decide to move to Germany for your degree?

My decision to study abroad was driven by a desire for personal growth, and the chance to gain both a global perspective and exposure to diverse cultures.

After careful consideration, I applied to Charité Universitätsmedizin in Berlin because of its renowned reputation for medical education and research. The course also offers hands-on clinical experience right from the start, which appealed to me, and is taught in German. This is a language in which I demonstrated my proficiency when I received an Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award for High Achievement in my Cambridge IGCSE in German, in 2019.

The vibrant city of Berlin, with its rich history and innovative healthcare system, further captivated me, so overall Charité offered the perfect combination of academic excellence, cultural immersion, language development, and practical training, aligning perfectly with my personal and professional goals.

How did your Cambridge qualifications support your university application?

The recognition of Cambridge qualifications by German universities allowed me to bypass the typical foundation year requirement for international high school graduates. This resulted in my direct admission to university, and underlined the value and impact of a Cambridge education.

In 2018 I was also ranked Top in the World for my Cambridge IGCSE in Maths, which together with the Achiever’s Award greatly bolstered my university application by demonstrating my commitment to academic excellence.

What is it like to study in Germany as an international student?

It has been a rollercoaster ride, but also a fulfilling and transformative journey. The academic environment is rigorous and research-oriented, encouraging critical thinking and independent study.

Support for international students includes orientation programmes, language courses, and financial assistance, which together make Germany a very student-friendly country. The opportunity to immerse myself in the cultural landscape and interact with students from diverse backgrounds has enriched my personal and academic growth.

How did your Cambridge qualifications prepare you for university?

My Cambridge education gave me the necessary tools and resilience to excel in my degree and adapt to undergraduate life with confidence. Cambridge delivers an immersive learning experience combined with critical thinking skills which together effectively prepared me for Charité’s patient-centered and clinical approach, and for a medical education focused on holistic care.

The subject knowledge gained in my Cambridge studies gave me a solid foundation for my university course, together with essential study skills, while the rigorous curriculum encouraged critical thinking and independent research. I also developed the perseverance required to overcome academic challenges - an invaluable skill which continues to serve me well in my undergraduate studies as I navigate demanding coursework and overcome other hurdles.

What are your future career plans?

I am considering specialising in either dermatology or nephrology as both fields offer unique opportunities to make a difference to patients' lives. I am particularly passionate about using my skills and knowledge to give back to my community and to contribute to the healthcare of my home country, Egypt.

Would you recommend Cambridge qualifications to other students considering studying at university?

Absolutely! Studying for my Cambridge qualifications was a very special experience - not just about acquiring knowledge but also about discovering a passion and developing a genuine love for the subjects I studied. This made my learning journey incredibly meaningful and memorable and was a truly transformative experience, allowing me to grow academically and cultivate a lifelong joy for learning.
