Team Leader

VIDEO: Find out about being a team leader.

As a team leader you will guide and coordinate a team of assistant examiners to ensure they are all marking to the same standard, as well as marking candidates' scripts yourself.

The team leader has a multi-faceted role and is required to:

  • participate in a team leaders’ standardisation meeting if required
  • coordinate the marking of a team. This includes making sure the assistant examiners understand both the administrative procedures and the mark scheme, and can mark consistently and accurately
  • supervise and monitor marking standards, and report on the work of the assistant examiners allocated to you and take appropriate steps to ensure accuracy and consistency. This includes:
    • re-marking samples from assistant examiners to ensure the consistency of their marking
    • reporting back to assistant examiners on the consistency of their marking
    • being available to advise assistant examiners
    • recommending scaling of assistant examiners’ marking where necessary, referring any problems or issues of note to the principal examiner, and keeping the principal examiner informed of the progress of marking within the team.
  • mentor new assistant examiners in the team
  • mark a specified number of scripts
  • prepare a report on the examination to assist the principal examiner in writing reports for our internal use and for publication, as required
  • assist with any Grade Review and attend Grade Review Meetings, when required
  • undertake re-marking and report writing following result enquiries, when required
  • stand in for, and perform the duties of, the principal examiner, if required
  • act as a consultant and offer advice on matters related to the examination, if required
  • assist, if asked, with the provision of training for teachers or examiners
  • perform all these services in accordance with our instructions and schedules.

Team leaders are usually required to attend standardisation meetings. Therefore most of our team leaders are based in the UK.
