CEM: Helping schools improve educational outcomes

Accurately measuring a child’s potential and progress is a very valuable part of understanding and responding to their educational needs. CEM is one of the largest and longest established providers of formative assessments for children of all ages.

CEM’s baseline and diagnostic assessments add huge value to Cambridge International Schools by:

  • giving measures of an individual's potential and progress through school, and helping to predict grades in qualifications such as Cambridge IGCSE, O Level and AS & A Level
  • informing teachers where interventions may help improve student outcomes
  • giving teachers a deeper understanding of the learning environment seen by children and young people.

BASE for ages 4-5

An objective, baseline assessment carried out at the beginning and end of the academic year to show progress.

BASE assesses:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication.

InCAS for ages 5-11

A diagnostic assessment of literacy and mathematics ability and progress in both areas to support Cambridge Primary. The additional measure of developed ability gives an indicator of students’ ability to acquire new knowledge and skills.

InCAS assesses:

  • Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Developed ability
  • Mental arithmetic
  • Spelling
  • Attitudes.

MidYIS for ages 11-14

A standardised baseline assessment that provides information about learners’ strengths and weaknesses, most likely examination grades and value-added performance indicators for Cambridge IGCSE.

MidYIS assesses:

  • Vocabulary
  • Mathematics
  • Non-verbal ability
  • Skills.

Yellis for ages 14-16

Yellis follows on from the MidYIS assessment, re-establishing developing ability measures and offering data which you can use to predict grades for Cambridge IGCSE and O Level.

Yellis assesses:

  • Vocabulary
  • Mathematics
  • Non-verbal ability.

Alis for ages 16-19

Alis provides most likely examination grades and chances, and value-added performance analysis for AS & A Level based on Cambridge IGCSE average point scores and/or CEM’s Computer Adaptive Baseline Test of developed ability.

Alis assesses:

  • Vocabulary
  • Mathematics
  • Non-verbal ability.

Who is CEM?

CEM is the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring. It has joined the Cambridge family in a partnership between Cambridge Assessment and Cambridge University Press.

CEM is one of the largest and longest established research groups, a not-for-profit organisation and formerly part of the University of Durham. CEM works with schools and education professionals in 70 countries around the world, providing formative assessments for children of all ages.

CEM already works in many Cambridge International Schools, particularly in the Middle East, South East Asia and China, and the quality of its assessments is widely recognised in the UK and globally.

Bringing CEM into the Cambridge family is a hugely exciting opportunity to support educators worldwide in improving educational outcomes in their schools.
