Supporting learners' emotional health and wellbeing

Online conference June 2021

In sports and business coaching, reference is often made to a simple formula first used by the former professional tennis player, Tim Gallwey, in the 1970s:

'Performance equals potential minus interference.' This formula applies as well to the environment of teaching, learning and assessment.

'Interference' comes in all shapes and sizes and it is not always easy to see what is getting in the way. This is especially true of interference related to mental health and wellbeing. We hear these words a lot, but do we know what they mean so that we can support our learners throughout their education?

In this online conference we explored in detail some of these aspects of teaching and learning. We helped you understand how to define emotional health, wellbeing and, within this, anxiety, particularly with regard to taking assessments.

Building on the expertise of our two keynote speakers we reflected together in discussions and workshops on practical ways in which we can build our learners’ resilience and offer them tools and techniques to use when they meet emotional challenges and barriers.
