Cambridge Pre-U Music embraces the creative, interpretative, historical and analytical aspects of the subject and tests learners' interpretative, comparative and critical thinking skills. A Personal Study allows learners to extend their skills through a challenging project of personal interest, choosing between a dissertation, advanced recital, free composition or music technology project.
The syllabus provides preparation for further study and an opportunity for learners to develop a range of skills, knowledge and understanding in music.
We know that Covid-19 presents challenges to schools and students taking Cambridge Pre-U. In line with schools' feedback, we have made adaptations to this Cambridge Pre-U subject for June 2021. Our adaptation guidance is published in full in the Covid section of our website.
We have made some changes to the wording and layout of the front covers of our question papers to reflect the new Cambridge International branding and to make instructions clearer for candidates.
You will see these changes on live question papers from June 2020 and therefore we have made these changes on the specimen materials for this syllabus. The specimen questions and mark schemes remain the same.
The last examination series for Cambridge Pre-U Music (9800) will be June 2023. There is a resit opportunity in June 2024, there is no option for candidates to resit after this date. We communicated this decision to schools in November 2019.
The syllabus year refers to the year in which the examination will be taken.
For some subjects, the syllabus states that Grade Descriptions will be made available after first assessment in 2020 or 2021.
Publication of grade descriptions for these syllabuses has been delayed. This is to make sure that grade descriptions reflect examination outcomes appropriately and are based on the full range of candidate performance after the 2020 and 2021 series.
We provide a wide range of support so that teachers can give their learners the best possible preparation for Cambridge programmes and qualifications. For teachers at registered Cambridge schools, support materials for specific syllabuses are available from the School Support Hub (username and password required).
