Cambridge IGCSE Spanish - First Language (0502)

Syllabus overview

Cambridge IGCSE First Language Spanish is designed for learners whose first language is Spanish. The course enables learners to:

  • develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
  • use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.

Learners are also encouraged to read widely, both for their own enjoyment and to further their awareness of the ways in which Spanish can be used. Cambridge IGCSE First Language Spanish also develops more general analysis and communication skills such as inference, and the ability to order facts and present opinions effectively.

Syllabus updates

  • Summary of the changes
    • We review all of our syllabuses regularly to make sure they continue to meet the needs of our schools and are up-to-date with current thinking.

We have updated this syllabus and all assessment materials to make sure it is aligned with Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500) after feedback from teachers who told us that many candidates take both English and Spanish. Aligning the two syllabuses helps learners to understand what is expected from the assessment.

      How has the syllabus changed?

      • To make them more concise, we have updated the syllabus aims and assessment objectives wording (the assessment objectives test the same knowledge and skills as before).
      • To provide further guidance to teachers on what should be taught, we have made the syllabus content clearer.

      How has the assessment changed?

      • We have removed tiering from this qualification to promote equality of opportunity for all our students and to increase the possibility of them reaching their full potential. This means that there is now only one Reading paper and this will be accessible to all candidates. At syllabus level all candidates now have access to grades A*–G.
      • The Coursework Portfolio Component (formerly Component 4) has been removed.
      • Component 3 (Speaking and Listening Test) is optional and separately endorsed and does not contribute to a candidate’s overall grade.
      • AO weighting percentages have been amended slightly.
      • We have changed the number of marks available in each component and the duration of Paper 1 (Reading).

When do these changes take place?

The updated syllabus is for examination from June 2022 onwards. Please see the 2022-2024 syllabus above for full details.

Important notices

  • Grade descriptions
    • For some subjects, the syllabus states that Grade Descriptions will be made available after first assessment in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

Publication of grade descriptions was paused in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the temporary changes to the grading standard that have been in place for 2020, 2021 and 2022. We are currently working on producing these grade descriptions. This work will make sure that grade descriptions reflect examination outcomes appropriately and are based on the more stable grading standard that we expect to have in place for June 2023 onwards.
