Cambridge Pre-U classroom support

Important notice for schools teaching Cambridge Pre-U

In November 2019 we announced that we will be withdrawing Cambridge Pre-U. The last examinations for the majority of subjects* will be June 2023, with a resit available in June 2024. No teaching of Cambridge Pre-U syllabus should be started for new students in September 2022.

*There are five syllabuses being withdrawn a year earlier with last examinations in June 2022 - Latin, Classical Greek, Psychology, Russian and Italian. Only resit candidates can be entered to take the exams in June 2023 for these syllabuses, new candidates will not be eligible to enter.

Teachers can draw on a wide range of support, including training workshops (INSET) and teaching materials (such as teacher guides, past papers, mark schemes and example candidate responses). We also hold education events to support Cambridge Pre-U schools.

Go to the Resource Centre to find teaching materials by subject, including syllabuses, past papers and teacher guides.

Cambridge teachers can also access the School Support Hub, a secure site which contains a wide range of support resources and discussion forums. The School Support coordinator at your school will be able to give you a login for this site.

Cambridge Pre-U Interim Feedback

As part of the support package for schools offering Cambridge Pre-U, Cambridge provides an Interim Feedback service that can be used at any time during the two year courses. This service is offered across the majority of Cambridge Pre-U subjects as a way for schools to monitor student progress and to check that teachers are applying the mark scheme correctly. It is available only for components that are examined as timetabled written papers.

Students normally sit the specimen papers that can be found on each individual subject page on the public website. If students have already seen a specimen paper, you may use a past paper instead, provided that at least ten months have elapsed since it was taken as a ‘live’ examination. We cannot comment on candidates’ answers to questions that schools have written. We can comment only on candidates’ answers to questions supplied by Cambridge.

Teachers at your school will mark the scripts, and email a scanned sample of them to us. Cambridge Pre-U examiners will write a report on this sample, commenting on:

  • the main characteristics of the performance of your students
  • the application of the marking criteria
  • the rank order submitted.

Cambridge Pre-U grades will not be assigned for Interim Feedback scripts. However, examiners will be able to point to features that exemplify the kinds of performance they will be looking for in awarding marks for Pass, Merit and Distinction. In some cases, they may also suggest a change in rank order. Please note that examiners writing Cambridge Pre-U Interim Feedback reports are operating outside a live series and therefore have not been through a standardisation process.

From 1 September 2017 any school will be able to use this service free of charge on one occasion per subject. Should a school wish to use this service again for that same subject a fee will apply.

Next steps

Please complete the feedback form below and submit to preuif@cambridgeinternational.org. Please submit the form at the earliest opportunity so that Cambridge can secure the examiners’ time to write the reports.
