Getting started with Assessment for Learning

Getting started with Assessment for Learning for primary teachers

Who are these courses for?

Enrichment Professional Development is for teachers and school leaders who have been teaching or implementing Cambridge programmes and qualifications for at least a year and would like to develop their practice in specific areas. This level of our training encourages teachers to reflect on, and take greater responsibility for their teaching as well as become more innovative in their classroom practice. The courses have been differentiated into two courses, one for primary teachers and one for teachers of all other age groups.

Course content

Collaboration and reflection are key to effective learning. Under the guidance of an experienced Cambridge tutor, you will be working closely with other teachers to develop your understanding and share ideas and experiences.

By the end of the course you will be equipped with a range of concepts and tools for application in your teaching, and will have developed personal insights into your own teaching practices – and the practices of your international colleagues.

The course lasts five weeks:

  • Week 1: Introductions and overview of Assessment for Learning.
  • Week 2: Exploring what effective Assessment for Learning looks like
  • Week 3: Preparing Assessment for Learning techniques to try in the classroom
  • Week 4: Teaching practice and reflection
  • Week 5: Planning next steps to integrate Assessment for Learning in teaching practice

Teachers should expect to spend 3 - 5 hours a week on the course.

Weeks 3 and 4 will involve putting what you have learned in to practice in a classroom and reflecting upon the outcome. Therefore it is important that you have access to learners during these weeks.

Aims

During the course, teachers will explore the following questions:

  • What is Assessment for Learning?
  • What does effective Assessment for Learning look like?
  • How does Assessment for Learning apply to my own practice?
  • What is my action plan?
  • How do I know that including Assessment for Learning in my classes has made a positive impact?

Successful completion of the course is based on participation in collaborative activities with teachers from around the world. The discussions and activities each week are in groups. We recommend that teachers access the course every day. A certificate is awarded to participants who complete key weekly activities and participate fully in discussions throughout the course.
