Online Improving Speaking Performance in the Classroom

Improving Speaking Performance in the Classroom courses are for foreign language teachers of all syllabus levels who want to develop their practice in this area. These courses encourage teachers to reflect on, and take greater responsibility for their teaching as well as become more innovative in their classroom practice.

In this course, teachers will have the opportunity to become more familiar with the key elements of a speaking lesson including how they can help their learners to improve their speaking ability and increase their confidence by applying effective speaking practice.

Online Improving Speaking Performance courses are 5 weeks long and focus on the following:

  • Week 1: Theory and practice
  • Week 2: Strategies to develop speaking skills
  • Week 3: Preparing for teaching*
  • Week 4: Teaching and reflecting*
  • Week 5: Course review and next steps

*Weeks 3 and 4 will involve putting what you have learned in to practice and reflecting upon the outcome. It is important that you have access to learners during these weeks.

Teachers should expect to spend 3 - 5 hours per week on the course.

Successful completion of this course is based on participation in collaborative activities with teachers from around the world. The discussions and activities each week are in groups. You do not need to be online at a particular time of day for our online courses, but we recommend that you access the course every day. To help you manage your time and aid collaboration, we provide clear guidelines so you know which days to carry out the activities for each week.

Participants who complete key weekly activities and engage fully in discussions throughout the course will receive a certificate.

  • A certificate of participation is awarded to participants who complete some of the tasks on the course to a satisfactory level.
  • A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who complete the tasks on the course to a satisfactory level.
