Dr Jayati Churiwala

Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai

Quick facts

School: Prabhavati Padamshi Soni International Junior College, Mumbai

Studied: Cambridge International A Levels in Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Maths, and Cambridge International AS Level in English Language

Went on to: MBBS degree (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) at Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai

Career plans: Currently a Speciality Medical Officer in the Dept of General Surgery at KEM Hospital and hoping to gain a Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery

When at school, Dr Jayati Churiwala was 'quite sure' that her future career path lay in either medicine or biomechanical engineering and so chose to study Cambridge International A Levels in Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

'My ambition guided my subject choice,' she said, 'but I was also very impressed with the teaching methods used by Cambridge International, such as classroom presentations and seminars, and the emphasis on student-teacher interaction. This made concepts very easy to grasp, especially as a Cambridge school ensures an environment conducive to learning and growth.'

Jayati went on to study medicine, followed by a Master’s in General Surgery, at Seth GS Medical College and King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, in Mumbai. 'The Cambridge curriculum certainly equips you with essential skills and knowledge, teaches you application-based learning, and also helps your personal development,' she said. 'As a result of my biology and chemistry studies, for example, I was able to gain a better understanding of human physiological processes earlier on in my degree course. My English Language studies also helped my fluency and confidence, and I have since made many presentations at work and at conferences, and have also published several articles in medical journals, all in English.'

Now fully qualified, Jayati is a Specialty Medical Officer in the Department of General Surgery at KEM Hospital. She is currently preparing for her Intercollegiate MRCS exams (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) and eventually hopes to gain a Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery.
