Cambridge International A Level Chinese builds on the language skills gained at Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge O Level or Cambridge International AS Level, and is the ideal foundation for university-level study, or to improve career prospects.
Learners gain an understanding of how to use the language in a variety of situations. They will be expected to handle texts and other source materials, extracting information in order to respond to specific tasks. Through their studies, learners can expect to achieve greater fluency, accuracy and confidence in the language. They will also learn how to translate material from English into the Chinese.
The syllabus year refers to the year in which the examination will be taken.
We have redeveloped our Cambridge International AS & A Level Chinese offer in line with current best practice in languages. This change offers clearer progression routes based on learners' level of Chinese through closer alignment with the CEFR framework. We are withdrawing Cambridge International A Level Chinese (9715) to replace it with our newly designed Cambridge International A Level Chinese Language and Literature (9868) syllabus.
The last assessment of Cambridge International A Level Chinese (9715) will be November 2023. The first assessment of the new Cambridge International A Level Chinese Language and Literature (9868) syllabus will be June 2024. We communicated this change to schools in June 2021.
From 2022, Cambridge International Cambridge International A Level Chinese (9715) centres in Admin zones 4 and 5 will be able to enter candidates in our June exam series in addition to November. Please see our Guide to making entries in Direct for more information.
From 2020, we have made some changes to the wording and layout of the front covers of our question papers to reflect the new Cambridge International branding and to make instructions clearer for candidates - learn more.
We provide a wide range of support so that teachers can give their learners the best possible preparation for Cambridge programmes and qualifications. For teachers at registered Cambridge schools, support materials for specific syllabuses are available from the School Support Hub (username and password required).
