This syllabus is available for examination in June and November 2019, 2020 and 2021.
We are delighted to introduce Cambridge International AS Level English General Paper, a new syllabus that brings together the best of our current Cambridge International AS Level General Paper syllabuses (8001 and 8004).
When reviewing this popular qualification, teachers told us that they choose this subject to develop students’ English skills. After further research and analysis we have decided to rename it Cambridge International AS Level English General Paper to make clearer for schools and universities how it offers strong support with English.
Learners will develop a set of transferable skills including:
They will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of issues in these three broad topic areas:
Learners consider topics within local and international contexts. They should be able to draw upon knowledge and understanding gained from studying other subjects.
Through the study of these broad topic areas, learners will develop effective reading and writing skills in English. They will analyse and evaluate opinions and ideas and learn how to build an argument. Learners will explore and appraise a range of topics in local and international contexts and develop independent reasoning skills.
This syllabus helps learners to develop transferable skills which support further subject specific study. It promotes an ability to communicate in written English and is relevant to the study of a wide range of courses in higher education. It is suitable for candidates who plan to enter employment or further study, or as part of a course of general education.
The syllabus and support materials are available for teaching from September 2018. The syllabus will be assessed in June and November 2020 and 2021.
We recommend that learners should have studied a Cambridge IGCSE or Cambridge O Level course in a broad range of subjects, including English.
To help you deliver the new Cambridge International AS Level English General Paper, we are developing a comprehensive support package including teaching and exam preparation resources. The resources will be available in March 2018 in time for first teaching and can be accessed through the Teacher Support site.
A text book prepared by a Core Team Publisher will be available for the first time.
See our events and training calendar for details about online and face-to-face course for teachers.
