We have asked you to collect three pieces of evidence for each of your students. This guidance (PDF, 198KB) outlines our high-level approach to how you should work out your school-assessed grades from this evidence.
We understand that it is difficult to consider a portfolio of student evidence and then work out what grade should be given to the student – so our guidance gives you some structure to support this task, and also explains how to use your professional discretion to combine the pieces of evidence in the way that works best for your students.
To support you further, our detailed guidance on deciding school-assessed grades (PDF, 371KB) gives you the information that you will need to support your processes for marking and allocating final grades to students, to help ensure fairness and consistency in your approach. This guidance also includes case studies showing different ways of balancing the evidence to arrive at a final grade.
We have updated our guidance for avoiding bias and remaining objective in deciding students’ grades (PDF, 172KB). We strongly recommend that you read this and consider what steps you will take to ensure your schools’ decisions are objective judgements.
You must complete a Rationale Document for each syllabus for which you are submitting grades to us. The Rationale Document will guide you through what to consider when determining students’ grades.

Please complete the Rationale Document in parallel with determining and submitting students’ grades. It will support you in accounting for all the areas that should be considered in deciding final grades, and it will also serve as a valuable record of your processes and decision-making should you need to refer back to them. As well as explaining your process and decision-making to us if required, it will also help explain these to your students and parents.
You must not tell students the overall final grade that you have allocated. Students must not know the final grade before results are released in August 2021.
We will ask to see your Rationale Document alongside portfolios of student evidence as part of our Quality Assurance process.
